“I put on weight even if I just look at food”.
Have you heard someone saying this? Have you uttered variations of this argument to other people?
This is a self-limiting belief and a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you think like this then you have no chance.
What? You were only joking? That is even worse. If you say this kind of thing as a joke then maybe it is time to double check the meaning of a joke.
In reality, if the slim target of the joke, were binging and stuffing their face with the same amount of food as you, then they would be fat. Unless they had a serious illness or a tapeworm then it is simple physics.
If a thin person gorged themselves with junk food then sat around watching TV, then they will get fat.
Also, you can’t put on weight by looking at food. (Yes, I know, you were only, ahem, joking.)
Maybe the comment at the top of this page was funny 20, 30 or 40+ years ago back at the start of the current obesity epidemic. Maybe the first time someone said it on ‘Happy Days’ or ‘Mork and Mindy’ it got laughs. MAYBE. I can only speculate.
Now we are aware of the misery, sickness, and premature death associated with obesity. Maybe the morbidly obese shouldn’t be making a self-depreciating joke out of it.
If you joke like this then you are sabotaging yourself.
Why bother with discipline and effort when you are effectively stuck with the fat body you have, the slow metabolism? If you really believe it is true?
Does God / fate / family genetics really curse some people in this way?
Do you have a body that is genetically or physiologically ‘wired’ for weight gain?
Is it really ‘not your fault’ but Gods fault? Your parents fault?
Are you really a helpless victim here, absolved of any responsibility?
Because if you joke about other people being lucky that they don’t put on weight then this is what you are implying.
“Woe is me, I was born this way, I can’t help it, its an affliction, I need medicine…”
It is true that thin, active, and sporty people have a faster metabolism.
Many people get cause and effect the wrong way round. Their metabolism is normal because they are healthy, they look after themselves, they don’t overeat.
What I am saying is that a slim person has a faster metabolism because their body is working properly. If you are overweight or obese the cause is too many calories and not enough exercise. The effect is a slow metabolism, amongst other things
Healthy diet and exercise CAUSES a normal metabolism.
Junk food and laziness CAUSES a slow metabolism.
You are not a victim of a slow metabolism, you have created it by the choices you make.
You can fix it just as easily. If you lose fat and gain muscle then your metabolism will speed up. If you start to exercise then your metabolism will speed up. Simple isn’t it?
NOTE: Actual medical conditions that CAUSE a fast or slow metabolism such a thyroid dysfunction are rare in comparison to the number of fat people in denial. They are the ones who use their metabolism as a crutch, an artificial barrier. If you really believe that you have a medical problem then see a doctor, if not, then get a grip of reality.
