Are there any specialized protein shakes for women?
Well, the short answer is, no… At least none that I am aware of. The longer answer is a little more interesting so keep reading…
We live in a consumer driven world where each product or service provider is looking to tap into a niche. Existing niches have competition, new niches do not. If you can create a new product or service where there is no competition you can make a fortune!
So, when the first person created vitamin supplements for women, they stole easy market share from the manufacturers creating general multivitamins.
Sometimes products are designed for niche markets with real advantages and for good reason. For example golf clubs for kids, or for left-handed swingers make complete sense for practical reasons of being able to use them properly.
Don’t worry about getting too bulky. If you are a woman, you are more likely to become sexy and stunning than muscle-bound by going to the gym. There are no protein shakes for women!
Back to the health and fitness domain, yoga or aerobics for women makes sense, because it makes many women feel more comfortable being in the presence of just women.
If they are body conscious or nervous, an all female environment makes complete sense.
But with vitamins, there is patchy evidence as to how well multivitamins work at all, let alone whether they can be targeted towards men or women. There is some logic involved though, maybe some vitamins and minerals are conducive to testosterone or oestrogen production…
As for protein, well everyone needs protein for their good health and functioning. Whether this protein comes from dairy, meat, rice or hemp, it will be metabolized similarly by men and women.
Yet some women still ask about protein shakes for women. I think that there are a couple of valid reasons for this:
Many women want to lift weights but do not want to become muscle-bound. They want to “stay feminine”.
This fear is completely unfounded because:
- It is hard enough for a man to get muscle-bound even with his ego and aggression fully involved. Getting muscular takes a lot of work and dedication, it isn’t going to suddenly happen after a few sessions.
- Women find it much harder to build muscle because they do not have the testosterone levels conducive to it. There is a big difference in the level of muscle mass between professional body building men and women.
- Who says that being muscular is not feminine? If you start to feel that you are losing any femininity you could always adjust your workouts. But trust me, from going from the stage of not exercising and working out at all, to getting “too muscular” is a good problem to have!
So, if you are looking for protein shakes for women, you ought to ask some different questions instead. For example, ask yourself:
- Do I want to reduce fat AND build muscle? If so then you need to choose a low-fat/high protein shake rather than a bulking shake.
- Do I want an easy mixing, great tasting protein shake? Read protein shake reviews, then buy smaller packets so you can experiment.
- Do I want to worry about my differences to a male weight trainer or athlete, or get on the same path of health, nutrition and vitality?
- Do I really want to get big? Then you will need a weight gain shake, and it might make sense to look at other supplements such as Creatine or Glutamine powder.
It is more important for you to focus on the fundamentals of your fitness journey…
… Focus on your diet of nutritious whole foods…
… Take care of your good sleep patterns…
… Create sensible warm up, stretching and training habits…
… And most of all, get out there and kick some ass!
