OMG Fat Loss! This would be a nice comment to see on your social media wall after posting a recent picture of yourself… We know that OMG means “oh my God”, “oh my gosh”, or “oh my goodness”. This is a reaction to someone who is taken aback or shocked by something.
Lets turn this acronym from something that is reactive, to something that is proactive. In the future, when someone says OMG in any circumstance, I am going to train my mind to think:
OMG…. OBSESSION, MOTIVATION, GOAL-ORIENTED
So OMG Fat Loss will take on a new meaning for me, it will be a reminder of the fundamentals of change, and the achievement of results. Have you ever noticed in life that whenever there is a success story, there is usually a background of intense obsession, motivation and goal-orientation? If you disagree, maybe you need to dig a bit deeper.
When people “make it,” sometimes there is a view that they have stumbled upon a lucky idea, that they achieved the results by accident. This is the lottery ticket mentality. By living life with a lottery ticket mentality you are likely to just end up with broken dreams. In fact you are statistically far more likely to end up with a broken body through an accident than to ever win the lottery.
There are thousands of weight loss secrets out there, most of them are not so secret I must add… There are hundreds of exercise routines or techniques to help you burn fat and build muscle. There are too many diets to keep track of, most that work in the short-term, if you could just stick to them…
So the problem is not that there are not enough weight loss secrets, fat loss tips or fitness advice in the World… The problem is you! (Me too on many days!) The problem is that when people realize that they have a problem, then identify the solution, they do not follow through on their fat loss goals!
So, instead of focusing on tools and techniques, you have to start with yourself. Think as much as possible about 3 things …The “OMG Fat Loss technique”.
OMG FAT LOSS…. O for Obsession
Regardless of what you want to achieve in life, you are far more likely to get there with some obsession. We need to remember that there are “good obsessions” and “bad obsessions”. Both good obsessions and bad ones can be nurtured and reinforced.
To use an example of love, a good obsession is when both of you feel the same way. If you really love someone and they love you back then the result is amongst the best experiences in the World. As you think of your partner more often, and think of new ways to express your love, as long as they are doing the same, the union becomes stronger and stronger.
A “bad obsession” might be unrequited love when the other person is not interested. To pursue this obsession you will become a creep and a stalker, this will cause pain for the other person but especially for yourself.
Being too obsessed with weight loss or fat loss in itself is a “bad obsession” this leads to over-training and anorexia. So get obsessed, not with weight loss in itself, but with health and vitality. If you focus on health and vitality then you will maintain a healthy balance, as rest, recovery and nutrition is of equal importance to calorie counting or exercise.
OMG FAT LOSS… M for Motivation
Motivation gets you started, commitment keeps you going. In a simplistic way, you will get motivated and stay more motivated if you have the end in mind. You need a real burning desire for the eventual result that you are looking for. This helps you keep your eye on the ball when you get sidetracked from your weight loss journey.
You will find that there are plenty of ways to give your motivation a boost. You could reward yourself with a gym training clothes after a month of staying on course. You might find that green tea or extra virgin coconut oil helps give you an edge. External factors will help your motivation, when people comment “OMG fat loss” on your social media, or when the store assistant guesses your clothes size at one or two sizes lower.
Motivation is so important, but it can wane easily, this is why the G in “OMG fat loss” is so important…
OMG FAT LOSS… G is for Goal-Oriented
This is by far the most important of the three words in “OMG Fat Loss”. Being goal-oriented means that you are mindful of what brings you towards your goals, and what takes you away from them. It is only if your goals are worthy enough that you will have the necessary emotion and commitment to keep the necessary positive weight loss obsession, and the Fat Loss motivation mindset on track.
Your goals need to be inline with your values, and also positive in general. You are more likely to succeed if you want your “competition to admire you”, than if you want to “destroy your competition”. You need to spend time researching, writing, brainstorming and dreaming about the goals that you want to achieve. Then you need to take persistent action towards the goal destination.
It is the difference between someone who wants to lose weight for summer but then does nothing about it, and someone who wants to lose 2 pounds of fat this week… This article isn’t about goal setting, but suffice to say that in relation to your fat loss goals, more research and effort is required.
So, there you have it, a proactive version of OMG instead of a reactive version. If you ever see a tweet, comment or text saying “OMG fat loss”, maybe you could think of this article? More importantly think about what you can do to improve your healthy weight loss obsession, your fitness motivation or your being more fat loss goal-oriented.
